now is a great time to remind all of us of how noble a hero percy jackson is. because he refused to harm the demigods who fought beside luke. as much as he hated the fighting them, he understood why the were fighting. he recognized the gods failed them too. and to not acknowledge that in the aftermath of the war would be disingenuous to the lives lost on either side. and not only that. but he was the only demigod brave enough to tell gods how it is when they offered him immortality. he told the gods to their face that their faults in leadership and parenthood are what lead to their near demise. that they must swallow their pride and nurture the things they create, or the threat of a revolt will follow them. and his ass used his gods-given wish to make them promise to give their children a fair chance at a better life. no one was doing it like him. happy birthday, man.

also after walking into a pyre to die at the lowest moment of her 14 year old life and instead of burning to death enacting the miracle from her prophetic dreams that everyone in her family died and failed trying to do that brings magic back into the world for the first time in 300 years and three dragons who are loyal only to her and the next day there’s a giant red comet in the sky. what is this tenth grader supposed to do NOT suspect a little bit that she’s the messiah.

In my Zeus bag today so I'm just gonna put it out there that exactly none of the great Ancient Greek warrior-heroes stayed loyal and faithful and completely monogamous and yet none of them have their greatness questioned nor do we question why they had the cultural prominence that they did and still do.
Jason, the brilliant leader of the Argo, got cold feet when it came to Medea - already put off by some of her magic and then exiled from his birthland because of her political ploys, he took Creusa to bed and fully intended on marrying her despite not properly dissolving things with Medea.
Theseus was a fierce warrior and an incredibly talented king but he had a horrible temper and was almost fatally weak to women. This is the man who got imprisoned in the Underworld for trying to get a friend laid, the man who started the whole Attic War because he couldn't keep his legs closed.
And we cannot at all forget Heracles for whom a not inconsiderable amount of his joy in life was loving people then losing the people around him that he loved. Wives, children, serving boys, mentors, Heracles had a list of lovers - male and female - long enough to rival some gods and even after completing his labours and coming down to the end of his life, he did not have one wife but three.
And y'know what, just because he's a cultural darling, I'll put Achilles up here too because that man was a Theseus type where he was fantastic at the thing he was born to do (that is, fight whereas Theseus' was to rule) but that was not enough to eclipse his horrid temper and his weakness to young pretty things. This is the man that killed two of Apollo's sons because they wouldn't let him hit - Tenes because he refused to let Achilles have his sister and Troilus who refused Achilles so vehemently that he ran into Apollo's temple to avoid him and still couldn't escape.
All four of these men are still celebrated as great heroes and men. All four of these men are given the dignity of nuance, of having their flaws treated as just that, flaws which enrich their character and can be used to discuss the wider cultural point of what truly makes a hero heroic. All four of these men still have their legacies respected.
Why can that same mindset not be applied to Zeus? Zeus, who was a warrior-king raised in seclusion apart from his family. Zeus who must have learned to embrace the violence of thunder for every time he cried as a babe, the Corybantes would bang their shields to hide the sound. Zeus learned to be great because being good would not see the universe's affairs in its order.
The wonderful thing about sympathy is that we never run out of it. There's no rule stopping us from being sympathetic to multiple plights at once, there's no law that necessitate things always exist on the good-evil binary. Yes, Zeus sentenced Prometheus to sufferation in Tartarus for what (to us) seems like a cruel reason. Prometheus only wanted to help humans! But when you think about Prometheus' actions from a king's perspective, the narrative is completely different: Prometheus stole divine knowledge and gifted it to humans after Zeus explicitly told him not to. And this was after Prometheus cheated all the gods out of a huge portion of wealth by having humans keep the best part of a sacrifice's meat while the gods must delight themselves with bones, fat and skin. Yes, Zeus gave Persephone away to Hades without consulting Demeter but what king consults a woman who is not his wife about the arrangement of his daughter's marriage to another king? Yes, Zeus breaks the marriage vows he set with Hera despite his love of her but what is the Master of Fate if not its staunchest slave?
The nuance is there. Even in his most bizarre actions, the nuance and logic and reason is there. The Ancient Greeks weren't a daft people, they worshipped Zeus as their primary god for a reason and they did not associate him with half the vices modern audiences take issue with. Zeus was a father, a visitor, a protector, a fair judge of character, a guide for the lost, the arbiter of revenge for those that had been wronged, a pillar of strength for those who needed it and a shield to protect those who made their home among the biting snakes. His children were reflections of him, extensions of his will who acted both as his mercy and as his retribution, his brothers and sisters deferred to him because he was wise as well as powerful. Zeus didn't become king by accident and it is a damn shame he does not get more respect.
#ginger rambles#ginger chats about greek myths#greek mythology#It's Zeus Apologist day actually#For the record Jason is my personal favourite of these guys#The argonauts are extremely underrated for literally no reason#And Jason's wit and sheer ability to adapt along with his piousness are traits that are so far away from what usually gets highlighted#with the typical Greek warrior-hero that I've just never stopped being captivated by him#Conversely I still do not understand what people see in Achilles#I respect him and his legacy I respect the importance of his tale and his cultural importance I promise I do#However I personally can't stand the guy LMAO#How do you get warned twice TWICE both by your mother and by Athena herself that going after Apollo's children is a bad idea#And still have the audacity to be mad and surprised when Apollo is gunning for Specifically You during the war you're bringing to His City#That You Specifically and Exclusively had a choice in avoiding#ACHILLES COULD'VE JUST SAID NO#I know that's not the point however so many other members of the Greek camp were simply casualties of Fate in every conceivable way man#Achilles looked at every terrible choice he could possibly make said “Well I'm gonna die anyway 🤷🏽” and proceeded to make the choice#so hard that he angered god#That's y'all's man right there#I left out Perseus because truthfully I don't actually know much about him#I haven't studied him even a fraction as much as I've studied some of the other big culture heroes and none of this is cited so i don't wan#to talk about stuff I don't know 100%#Anyway justice for Zeus fr#Gimme something give me literally anything other than the nonsense we usually get for him#This goes for Hera too btw#Both the king and queen of the skies are done TERRIBLY by wider greek myth audiences and it's genuinely disheartening to see#If y'all could make excuses for Achilles to forgive his flaws y'all can do it for them#They have a lot more to sympathise with I'll tell you that#(that is a completely biased statement; you are completely free and encouraged to enjoy whichever figures spark joy)#zeus

Something I really like is that April’s constant stream of odd jobs she goes through is somewhat reflected in the boys as well. Like, you have April working at random pizza places or getting a crane license or being fully willing to apply for a job at a place clearly made out of cardboard. Then you have the boys as well who do anything from working as a basketball mascot, building a massive dog park, being waiters, getting a whole band gig at a theme park, etc, etc-
Main difference is that April actively applies for these jobs (and is hopefully paid for the short time she’s in them) whereas for the bros the jobs usually find them (and they practically never get paid.) It doesn’t even stop at jobs either, they just seem to casually amass skills in general.
I don’t know, I like how both April and the turtles are just so ready and willing to do things. Sure, they’re not always good at these things, but they do them readily! In a way, being heroes is just another job (well, more like volunteer work/vigilantism/another fun activity) that they initially took on because of their general sense of “why not?”
They’re very willing and open to trying out new things despite their tendency to revert back to what they enjoy (and how commonly trying new things ends up going wrong), and I think that adaptational interest of theirs really helps them be well rounded in multiple regards.
#rottmnt#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#rottmnt headcanons#like not even just jobs these characters just like to go out and do things!#even if they’re initially not interested they’re so curious and stuff that they’ll do it anyway#I wonder if April being as curious and incredibly open minded as she is rubbed off on the boys growing up#and they like…osmosis’d this personality trait from her to be like ‘yeah sure whatever’ to any antic#I also just think that they’re bored teenagers with a TON of time on their hands so they like to just live it up#I think the boys always had the desire to go out and apply themselves but meeting April likely pushed them more#y’know I wonder#what if April narrowed down just one job when in college and she actually managed to keep it#like…almost as a form of growth - she narrowed down jobs and careers and schooling as she hit early adulthood?#it’s kinda reflected in raph as well - originally so open and for goofing off but now much more singularly focused on hero stuff#kinda a sad way to look at growing up but it works here#because you have the three younger sibs still readily doing other things#not as focused on responsibility or singular paths#it’s sad because adulthood absolutely does not mean not being open to other things#but at that time in your life sometimes there’s a pressure and unwanted responsibility to pick a path y’know?#and it’s a relief to learn that actually there was never just one set path with one set trail you always had to stay on#and I think that’s reflected in how raph at the end of the movie opens back up to playing around and doing things for the fun of it

New headcannon
Scourge and Knuckles never meet in the comics, even though he used the Master Emerald to get a power boost, leading to a permanent mutation, etc etc.
So at some point after the prison break, Scourge is living on Mobius since his old team has taken over the anti-dimension,
The M.E has judged him for using it's power recklessly, so he is constantly "leaking" chaos energy, and it's slowly tearing his body apart. Sometimes it gets too overwhelming and causes his scars to reopen. He ends up going to Knuckles to return the excess energy. And although, it doesn't stop the problem 100%, but they've made a monthly routine out of it.
They're not friends, but now he hates Knuckles the least. The chao seem to have taken a liking to him though. But is it because of the chaos energy? Or because maybe deep down he has the potential to be a decent person?

thinking about the one line in MAG41 -- "I am not a brave man. I believe I am starting to come to terms with that fact, but I am, in certain circumstances, a very stubborn one" -- and how true it is. say what you will about Jon's character but at the end of the day, i'd say he's right. more often than not, he is not brave, just so goddamn curious and determined to know the truth that he finds himself willing to experience the fear anyways. that willingness to go through this fear is what makes him so perfect for the eye. he isn't brave enough to be unafraid but he's too stubborn to run like a coward. thinking about the one conversation jon has (with whom i literally cannot remember for the life of me right now) where he asks why all the other avatars seem to stop feeling remorse for the things they do and why the eye wouldn't take his guilt/fear/regret away from him, and gets the response of "why would it? when have those things ever stopped you?" and him just knowing that it's true. the fact that he embraces his fear and perseveres anyway simply because he's decided to. the absolute strength of will jon possesses being the reason for his successes and failures alike.

Weird amount of people I see say Jason fans want a jaybin who's a perfect angel that does no wrong. Am I just missing the people that actually do say this or are they just interpreting that from people upset at modern Jaybin who's only traits are being reckless angry and impulsive all the time forever

IT'S TIME! YOUR TIME TO SHINE BODEGAMEN!
Tumblr media
What a sweet baby boy! Sure would be a shame if he had serious mommy issues at 6-11 years old.
His hair is purplish-magenta, similar to how it's seen in the birthmark shot of "You're a good friend K.O."
He tends to rant about his pow cards, most recent videosgame and exercises, not noticing when people are tired of listening.
The Bodega and its other staff fascinate him, and he's labeled it the official unofficial coolest place in the plaza.
Tumblr media
"All the coolest heroes are here, after all, even the alley teens- occasionally!"
Tumblr media
Extremely put together, on a surface level at least. She enjoys the way the plaza lets her escape from the awkwardness of well- everywhere else. Behind the counter, she feels confident, and cool, and can wear noise-canceling headphones if things get too loud. Something her boss finds quite ironic with how loudly she enjoys dubstep blasting in her ears.
A major part of her sense of humor comes from jokingly bullying others, though she doesn't often know when she's going too far, and it can be hard to tell if she's bullying you as a friend or if she's genuinely annoyed at you.
She often plays with the fabric of her mesh sleeves when she's bored or just needs to touch something subconsciously.
Tumblr media
"...Dude are you kidding? This place is basically a hangout for weirdo outcasts... Oh hey, case in point:"
Tumblr media
If you ask about the odd turtleneck beneath his crop top, he'll lie and claim it's part of the uniform, pointing to Enid's mesh access as proof of it. Really he just enjoys the look and feel of a nice turtleneck, even when it's a bit too warm for a normal one. Plus the mesh lets him show off his killer abs.
It can be rather jarring how much his personality changes when anyone he recognizes enters the bodega. But at least in the stockroom, he can listen to his music, dress his way, and get a good workout in.
He has a hard time with what he doesn't realize is near-constant masking, and will sometimes hide in the stockroom just to avoid having to use the energy to interact with others, even his coworkers.
Tumblr media
"Aww what's that look for? Were you guys waiting for me in here?"
Tumblr media
They've got quite a close bond in a... occasionally get on each other's nerves sibling type of way. And in one way or another are all tied to the dojo as well as the bodega.
Maybe that's why Rad and Enid managed to be so invested in Mr. Boxx's nervous wreck crush for so long, even before he'd admit he still had one.
Tumblr media
They're like- a weird little family in their own way. What a strange little collection of heroes ❤️

jason being really fucking good with haircare and he seriously does NOT look the part
like wolves focus on grooming as a form of affection and a show of friendship
jason looks like if you trusted him with your hair you'd be bald by the end of the hour but he's really gentle and soft and braids pipers hair with leo
he looks like he uses 13 in one mens shampoo and then helps leo get a curl routine

After sitting and digesting the new Amazing Digital Circus episode, I've come to the conclusion that I really appreciate Jax for the simple fact that he's the first character in a popular series I can recall in a long while who's just an absolute, unabashed asshole.
It feels like in today's media and storytelling no one wants to make their characters too mean or too unlikable. They're afraid to alienate the audience: The absolutely abysmal sanding down and softening up of The Grinch in the Illumination adaptation back in 2018 specifically comes to mind; their flagship franchise is about villains but they can't make the Grinch, the mean one, MEAN.
Tumblr media
If a character is in the 'asshole'-archetype, they always fall into the "Stands off to the side and spouts one-liners and pretends to not care but absolutely has a soft side for this one thing/person" type of character.
Jax is mean, he physically pushes people over and out of the way, he insults everyone around him and bullies Gangle, and his only source of joy is seeing people miserable and suffering; even if they're just NPCs. He's not the type of mean where it's fun to watch what he does, like you would a charismatic villain, he's uncomfortably awful.
He's not the Tumblr Sexyman, watered down and digestible-type of asshole, he's genuinely an awful fucking person and it's honestly refreshing to see a character with some bite to them, and the creator not being afraid to make a polarizing character on purpose.

why haven't i seen anyone acknowledge rody's plane autism... sure, you can argue that he's just really passionate about them but hear me out:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
through pino, we can see how happy he gets from just seeing a plane! esp in the left image, last panel; if you ask me, that's an expression of autism bliss.
now, i dunno about you, but me, personally, i cannot discern plane makes/models from one another. my knowledge is basic. i bring this up because of rody commenting "i've never seen a plane like that before." this stands out to me because the fact that he can tell goes to show how much he pays attention when a plane is flying overhead. he likely spends a Lot of time looking at planes. i mean, they live by an airport, there is a chair just outside their door, it's a fair assumption.
the fact his siblings acknowledge his love of planes... i mean, for someone who masks as much as rody, it's very telling.
the next thing i wanna call attention to is the baby mobile that's hanging up in their trailer!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
notice how it has little planes? from that, we can infer that this is rody's! (i'm sure they used this for his siblings as well, but it's rody's)
it's hanging up as decoration, but the fact that they still have it... it implies that rody went back into their desecrated home just to get it. it's important to him!!
additionally, in the credits of whm, we can see that rody's gotten a toy plane! it's on display next to their tv.
Tumblr media
to me, his love of planes is really significant because, well, if you think about it, it's another way in which he parallels deku! think about it: deku loves heroes, he loves heroes so much that it being a hero is his dream. rody loves planes! i don't think it's a far-fetched idea that the REASON why rody wants to become a pilot is because he loves planes!!!
